Herman C. (Dan) Daniel, III

In Memoriam

Herman C. “Dan” Daniel, III grew up in Chesterfield County.  He attended the University of Virginia where he obtained a B.A. in English.  Dan worked for the Internal Revenue Service for four years before attending University of Richmond School of Law to earn his Juris Doctor.  Dan then attended the William & Mary Law School, where he earned an LL.M. in Law of Taxation.


As an Associate Professor in the Department of Accounting and School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dan taught graduate level tax classes for several years at night while he built up his law practice.


For over 40 years, Dan’s practice focused on business/corporate law, estate planning, probate and estate administration with a special emphasis on tax implications.  


In his free time, Dan enjoyed duck and goose hunting in Canada and Argentina and spending time with his grandchildren and wife, Barbara.

Dan passed away in January 2019.

Mariah Daniel Carney
Principal Attorney

Mariah grew up in Richmond, graduating from Saint Gertrude High School.  She attended the University of Virginia and then moved to London, where she earned a Certificate in International Business from the Mountbatten Institute of Cambridge University, while working at a corporate finance law firm. After law school at Charleston Law,  Mariah became a Member of the South Carolina Bar and began her career at a private corporation in Greenville, South Carolina as In-House Counsel and Director of Legal Services. She returned to Richmond to practice law with her father, Dan.  They practiced together for seven years before Dan died in January 2019. 

Mariah is an active member of the Virginia State Bar.  She has served in multiple Chair positions on the Board of the Metro Richmond Women's Bar Association.  In her free time, Mariah enjoys live music, Peleton fitness, antiquing, and life with her son, daughter, dog Nigel, and husband Alan.
